- Title
MSR editorial—Special issue for DKB: Fundamental research at its best.
- Abstract
He has been consumed by the fundamentals of ions and ion-molecule reactions ever since (for 55+ years) and has contributed in many areas of gas-phase ion chemistry: ionospheric chemistry, interstellar ion chemistry, physical organic ion chemistry, ion catalysis, fullerene ion chemistry, charge-state chemistry, He droplet ion chemistry, and most recently relativistic ion chemistry (see his contribution in this issue). This "Festschrift" honoring Diethard contains a collection of six review articles which illuminate the extraordinary contributions he has made to unravel fundamental aspects of gas-phase ion chemistry and physics in their broadest sense. Much of this ion chemistry was achieved in a flow tube reactor interfaced with quadrupole mass spectrometers upstream for the selection of reactant ions and downstream for the selection of product and reactant ions.
