- Abstract
The primary purpose of this exploratory study is to highlight the vital issue of national importance and create awareness in the country. The legal deposit is considered very important and essential in bibliographic control nationally and internationally, safeguarding national cultural heritage and its transfer to future generations. Legal deposit was enacted first in France in 1537 and now exists in many countries. In Pakistan it was adopted in 1962 through copyright ordinance and enacted in 1967. This paper defines the concept of legal deposit, its history, development, basic principles, different elements and constitutional development related to subject under study. Exploring the origins and history of legal deposit evolved around various cultures, nations, and the progress of memory organizations. Compliance of 20 publishers selected through purposive sampling was also checked. Existed documented sources in the form of publishers' catalogues and Pakistan national bibliography were used for measuring the compliance and result was disappointing as compliance was only 19%. This study will help in broadening the understanding of related concepts and hopefully will be the subject of interest for researchers.
