The Power of Language Experience for Cross-Cultural Reading and Writing.
- Authors
Landis, David; Umolu, Joanne; Mancha, Sunday
- Abstract
The article discusses how a language experience approach (LEA) to teaching reading can offer learning opportunities that connect different languages, cultures, and life experiences for students who lack relevant reading materials. According to the article, LEA incorporates students' retellings of home and community events to create materials for reading and writing purposes. LEA also provides a solution to teaching cross-cultural reading education that addresses the diverse interests of students, the promotion of a more relevant educational experience, and the organization of a reading curriculum. The historical development of LEA teaching and several workshops to adapt LEA are discussed.
