- Abstract
The article discusses the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century history of beer and ale in Great Britain based on references to brewing made by authors John Dryden and Alexander Pope, as well as depictions of the beer industry appearing in the works of artist William Hogarth. Some of the works considered include Dryden's novel "The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner," Hogarth's 1751 print entitled "Second Stage of Cruelty," and Pope's satiric verse "The Dunciad, Variorum."
