- Abstract
This article discusses the controversy over a reference in the poem "Piers Plowman." Various scholars discuss their interpretation of the words "passion of Seint Avereys" as used in the poem. W. W. Skeat assumed that the reference related to two saints who were known for their dietetic asceticism and were used as a counterpoint to the overindulgence of the Doctor of Divinity. William Langland argues that the words were intended to read Saint Avarice and Saint Averröes and that the latter saint referred to the subtle and dangerous sophistry used by friars of the time.
