- Title
Some ‘Alsatian’ Etymologies from Eighteenth-Century London.
- Authors
Sayers, William
- Abstract
The article focuses on author Jonathan Swift's criticism of written words in his column in the September 1710 issue of the newspaper "The Tatler." Writing as his pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff Esq he condemned arbitrary breaks, via dashes, in the flow of exposition. Swift identified these neologisms produced in a certain stratum of urban society, then characterized them as autonomous organisms attempting to navigate mainstream speech. In the "Apology" for "The Tale of a Tub" Swift documents the progress of popular words.
