- Title
PRINCE HENRY AND FERRABOSCO'S AYRES OF 1609.
- Authors
Coren, Pamela
- Abstract
The article discusses the works of Alfonso Ferrabosco, music tutor to Prince Henry of England from 1605 to 1612 and the Royal patronage of Ferrabosco. Ferrabosco published two books, both in 1609: "Lessons for 1, 2 and 3 viols," dedicated to the Earl of Southampton, and "Ayres," a book of solo songs to the lute and viol. Ferrabosco was, in his own time, as in ours, most highly regarded as a composer of consort music for viols, but he lived and worked through the period when the lute ayre, combining contemporary lyric verse with the newest musical styles, was the most fashionable musical genre.
