ARTHUR GOLDINC'S TRANSLATION OF THE NAMES OF ACTAEON'S HOUNDS IN OVID'S METAMORPHOSES III.206-224, 232-233.
- Authors
Celoria, Francis
- Abstract
The article discusses various names of hounds. In 1888, the journal "Notes and Queries," ran a series on dog and other animal names in literature. This was followed by an equally enthusiastic sequence in 1904 which had to be stopped by the editor. But animal names need not be trivia. In Robert Henryson's book "The Testament of Cresseid," the name of a horse may figure usefully as a tracer for locating a source. Various names that have been discussed are: blab, blackfoote, bowman, fleetwood, etc.
