- Abstract
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has generated a significant impact at the level of mental health in the world population. In order to approach the understanding of various aspects related to this topic, the present study was oriented to investigate the presence of anxiety and its relationship with the management of coping strategies in a sample of university students during the situation of social distancing in the pandemic context. Method: A quantitative, descriptive-correlational study was carried out with a sample of 310 university students with an average age of M = 24.6 (Dt = 6.8). The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Coping Strategies Scale (EEC-M) were applied. Results: The results show/bear out the presence of a moderate level of anxiety in the study sample. An adequate level of management of functional strategies was identified, such as problem solving (M = 3.7 (Dt = .9), positive reassessment (M = 3.5 (Dt = 1.1) and search for social support (M = 3.2 (Dt = 1.1). However, it is also evident the presence of non-functional coping represented by strategies such as cognitive (M = 3.1 (Dt = .9) and emotional avoidance (M = 3 (Dt = 1) and denial (M = 2.8(Dt = .9). The anxiety variable presented a negative correlation with the problem solving strategy (p = .004/r = .220) and positive reappraisal (p = .000/r = .421); and the positive correlation with emotional avoidance (p = .000/r = .319), expression of coping difficulty (p = .000/r = .498), aggressive reaction (p = .000/r = .568) and waiting (p = .012/r = .194). Discussion and conclusions: being discussed the importance of the implementation of psychosocial projects aimed at strengthening functional coping skills in the general population and especially in the teenagers and young people as a preventive measure for managing atypical life situations associated with pandemic events or another nature catastrophes.
