The article reports on the findings of a study which examines the role of cell competition in tumour suppression in mice, conducted by Hans-Reimer Rodewald and colleagues. The study reveals that cell competition could act to eliminate older T cell progenitors in the thymus, thereby suppressing leukaemogenesis. It also shows that mice lacking such competition develop T cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL).
