- Abstract
This article explores the relationship between the prison environment and a parolee's predicament regarding job opportunities. Many progressive thinkers have expressed the need for more interaction between the business community and prisoners. It is a fact that the occupants of penal institutions throughout the U.S. face immeasurable odds in seeking meaningful employment upon completion of their sentences. Parolees are expected to successfully reintegrate themselves into society. As a solution, many propose special programs that provide job placement assistance to ex-offenders. Being a prisoner, the article author favors these programs. His aim here is to discuss, based on his experiences, the mental cruelties in the prison and their effects on prisoners' chances of becoming successful and productive employees. The author assumes that the ideology behind these programs and legislative initiatives is that they will ultimately lead to a reduction in the enormous rate of recidivism.
