MULTINATIONALS IN A TURBULENT THIRD WORLD: A PRESCRIPTION FOR SURVIVAL.

- Abstract
The article focuses on multinational business enterprises. For multinational corporations, the underdeveloped countries represent a prime area for growth and profits. However, mounting social unrest in these less developed countries (LDCs), coupled with allegations that multinational corporations share blame for their plight, makes the future problematic. The case of Bougainville Copper Pty. Ltd., strikingly illustrates how difficult it has become for a multinational to do the right thing today in the LDCs. Realizing that the mine operations would have a shattering impact on lives of the local people, Bougainville Copper took great pains and went to substantial expense to minimize the impact. Recent events, however, indicate that even these efforts may have been inadequate. As of now, the future of this heretofore very promising investment looks much less bright. The American management scene has been characterized in recent years by a notable growth in systems awareness and a serious attention to social audits and social investments.
