- Abstract
The article explores the historical relationship of women and chinaware in Great Britain. The author reflects on the connections between eighteenth-century British women and Chinese objects in material culture such as the dressing room and the tea table. The role of material culture in shaping the subject is also considered in the poetry of Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. Focus is given to the contemporaneous practices of decoration in the Chinese style and the aesthetic and social impact of chinoiserie.
