- Abstract
A critique is presented of the Chinese avant-garde novella "Huanle" (Bliss) by Mo Yan, focusing on themes of postmodernism in the book and in 1980s Chinese literature in general. Western influences on Chinese literature, narrative structures in Chinese novels, and philosophy in China are discussed, as well as authors such as Ihab Hassan, Lu Xun, and Douwe Fokkema. Psychoanalysis and death in literature are also mentioned.
