- Abstract
In recent years circumstances have spurred librarians of all types, and especially medical librarians, to update their knowledge in order to stay current and to carry out their professional activities more efficiently. Trends include the spread of new technologies, the growth in information related to health sciences, the variations in the level of quality and scientific rigour, and the continuing increase in the demand for information on the part of both health professionals and laypersons. All this has led to important changes in the ways that librarians develop their skills and knowledge as they adapt to the need for ongoing education. New technologies are not the only challenge facing professionals; there is also the need for librarians to assume the role of teaching about information retrieval techniques and to structure and plan for more complex services. These are some of the main factors that are stimulating medical librarians to improve their knowledge and skills.
