- Abstract
Surgical treatment is essential in the management of thyroid carcinomas and consists in total thyroidectomy (TT) in both differentiated and medullary hystological types. Depending on hystology and regional lymph node metastases, TT is associated with therapeutic or prophylactic lymphadenectomy. Anatomical variations of the parathyroid glands, of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve, can become technical pitfalls during compartmental neck dissection. Therefore, surgical technique must be adapted to the regional anatomical particularities in order to minimize the risk of glandular, vascular and nerve damage. The purpose of this paper is to review the surgical techniques used in the treatment of thyroid carcinoma in correlation with the anatomical variations of cervical structures.
