- Abstract
A new rhynchosaur,<E1>Hyperodapedon huenei</E1>sp. nov., is described from the Upper Triassic Santa Maria Formation of the Paraná Basin, Brazil. The holotype is an almost complete skull and mandible, collected at Inhamandá, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The diagnosis of the genus<E1>Hyperodapedon</E1>Huxley is revised to include not only<E1>H. huxleyi</E1>Lydekker and<E1>H. gordoni</E1>Huxley (as generally accepted), but also the new species described here, various specimens usually assigned to '<E1>Scaphonyx fischeri</E1>' Woodward, and '<E1>S</E1>'.<E1>sanjuanensis</E1>Sill.<E1>H. huenei</E1>sp. nov. exhibits a number of plesiomorphic features and appears to be the least derived species of<E1>Hyperodapedon</E1>, forming a sister taxon to the remaining members of the genus. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis for the more derived rhynchosaurs is presented. '<E1>Scaphonyx</E1>'<E1>sulcognathus</E1>Azevedo and Schultz represents the sister taxon of<E1>Hyperodapedon</E1>, while '<E1>Rhynchosaurus</E1>'<E1>spenceri</E1>Benton is considered to be a more derived Middle Triassic rhynchosaur.<E5>key words</E5>: Rhynchosauria,<E1>Hyperodapedon</E1>, Triassic, Brazil.
