- Abstract
The article discusses the collaboration between the University of Hawai‘i, Hawai‘i Sea Grant, and the Sumida watercress farm to train a new generation of community-engaged scientists. The farm, which has been in operation since 1928, relies on water from freshwater springs that have seen a decline in flow due to various factors. The collaboration involves co-designing research projects with local and Native Hawaiian students and farmers to address the farm's needs, such as water quality testing and monitoring. The project has had a positive impact on participants' awareness of sea level rise, food security, and commitment to community partnerships, and may serve as a model for training community-engaged scientists.
