- Authors
VAN DER BORGHT, EDUARDUS A. J. G.
- Abstract
The article examines the group social-cultural identities of members of religious communities after conflict. The social theories of Elizabeth Schmitz and Karl Barth on German reconciliation with its Jewish population during World War II are described, the role played by Barth in the authorship of the Barmen Declaration, and the actions of the Protestant church in Germany regarding the attempts by the Nazi government to exterminate Jewish people are criticized. The segmentation of religious identity into religious-cultural identity is criticized as well and theological support for reconciliation is called for.
