- Abstract
The article discusses the role of Catholicism and the Catholic Church in Polish politics, particularly during the period from the emergence of the Solidarność (Solidarity) movement in 1980 to 2011, when the Catholic radio station Radio Maryja celebrated its 20th anniversary. It addresses the origins of political Catholicism in Poland and its connection to Polish nationalism from the 19th century onward, the perception of the Catholic Church as a supporter of the anti-Communist movement in the 1980s, and the political attitudes evident in the programming and commentary of Radio Maryja since 1991. Popular attitudes regarding the separation of Church and state in Poland, as well as racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism in Radio Maryja's broadcasts are also evaluated.
