- Abstract
The article discusses the political and religious role of the Finnish-Russian border town of Sortavala, which was the venue of a number of nationalist and religious disputes from the 1880s to the 1920s. A focus of the unrest was a teacher training college and three home mission societies located in the town that were active promoters of Finnish national culture and language. Tensions among Lutheran and Russian Orthodox elements and Russian and Finnic language speakers in the district are reviewed, as well as a dispute over the distribution of Russian-language Bibles.
