- Abstract
The article determines the prevalence of oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the U.S. from 2009-2010. Results revealed a 6.9 percent prevalence of oral HPV infection among men and women aged 14 to 69 years, and 1.0 percent prevalence of HPV type 16. The researchers observed a bimodal pattern of oral HPV infection with respect to age, with peak prevalence among individuals aged 30-34 and 60-64 years. Women were found to have lower prevalence for any oral HPV infection than men. It appeared that individuals without a history of any type of sexual contact, increased number of sexual partners and cigarettes smoked per day are less likely to have HPV infection.
