The author discusses the role of Accountable Care Organizations(ACO) in changing the U.S. health care system by realigning the incentives of health care providers. Topics discussed include reason behind shortfall of managed care in the U.S.; regulation of ACOs by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS); types of managed care organizations in the U.S.; provisions of the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act and the Affordable Care Act; and fee-for-service program under Medicare.
