- Abstract
By means of an introductory text and a commented translation, the aim here is to analyze the work of Edgar Allan Poe as a critic and essayist. The chosen text is the first version of “The Philosophy of Furniture” (1840), in which the author develops ideas about good taste in decoration, addressing the readership of Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine. “The Philosophy of Furniture” is exemplary of Poe’s biting criticism, humor, and interest in establishing an aesthetic for literature magazines. While the satirical tone of this essay clashes with his best-known theoretical texts on unity and totality of effect, the first seeds of these ideas can already be read here, in his appreciations about decoration. This annotated translation of one of his lesser-known texts seeks to demonstrate how Poe became one of the first great critics of American culture and literature.
