- Abstract
Waste collagen nonwovens were fabricated using wet-laid technology with waste collagen solution as adhesive, which was extracted from waste collagen fibers using calcium oxide. The structure of waste collagen fibers and as-prepared nonwovens were characterized by SEM, and the properties of the formed nonwovens were investigated by ball bursting tester and fabric permeability meter. The results show that the waste collagen fibers are arranged in bundles with fineness and length of(0.18±0.11) dtex and(17.8±6.4) mm, respectively. The best extraction process of collagen is as follows: temperature 70 ℃, reaction time 80 min, calcium oxide dosage 8%-14%. Collagen fibers in the as-constructed nonwovens keep disordered and form stable structure with tangles. The as-prepared nonwovens are soft, and its thickness can be controlled by adjusting the slurry concentration. The bursting performance of crosslinked nonwovens is greatly improved. When the dosage of glutaraldehyde is 5%, the bursting strength is 96.9 N. The air permeability changes slightly. These results suggest potential for wet-laid waste collagen fiber nonwovens as high-end wiping materials.
