- Title
Timon of Athens, the Absent Mercer, and Nothing Poet: "To th' dumbness of the gesture/ One might interpret." (1.1.33-34).
- Authors
Bergeron, David M.
- Abstract
The article presents the author's views on the play "Timon of Athens," written by William Shakespeare. It mentions that many editors have omitted the character Mercer from the play as Mercer does not speak in the scene or have any specified action, and some have included him but treated it differently from the other characters' names. He analyses the thematic approaches and suggests that editors should retain Mercer due to Mercer's textual reality and theatrical possibility.
