- Abstract
The article presents a study on clinical symptoms of scrub typhus, also known as tsutsugamushi disease, in pregnant women. The study indicates that tsutsugamushi disease is a rickettsial infection and is an acute febrile disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, previously known as Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, which is endemic in eastern Australia, northern Japan, and eastern Russia. It shows that the signs and symptoms of scrub typhus on pregnant women are similar with non-pregnant women. It concludes that scrub typhus must be listed in differential diagnosis of the acute febrile illness in pregnant women who live in the endemic areas. It adds that treatment with azithromycin and roxithromycin is safe for pregnant women and chloramphenicol is an alternative drug and safe during pregnancy.
