- Abstract
A biography of African American slave, interpreter and trader Jeffrey Deroine is presented. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 14, 1806. He worked as a trader on the Missouri River for his slavemaster, Missouri fur trader Joseph Robidoux. He sued Robidoux for his freedom in 1822 without success. A third party purchased his freedom from Robidoux in 1832. He worked for the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs in the Ioway Agency as an interpreter. He died in March 1859.
