- Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of combined phacoemulsification and vitrectomy in perforating-globe injuries. Materials and Methods: Fourteen patients (2 women and 12 men) in ages ranging from 17 to 48 years with perforating-globe injuries and intraocular foreign body were included in this study. In all cases, lensectomy via phacoemulsification and vitrectomy were performed in the same session under topical anesthesia. Metalic foreign bodies were exctracted in 10 eyes (67%). Intraocular lens were implanted in 12 eyes (80%) while 3 eyes were left aphakic (20%). Results: Cases were followed-up for an average of 33 months (range 20 to 46 months) in the postoperative period. Retina was found attached on the final control in 13 eyes (87%) and intraocular lenses were in good position in 12 eyes (80%). Visual acuities are improved in 10 eyes (67%), did not change in 4 eyes (27%) and decreased in one eye (6%). In one eye phythisis bulbi, has been developed with light, perception and in one other eye without light perception (13%). Conclusion: Combined phacoemulsification and pars plana vitrectomy in perforating-globe injuries accepted as a reliable and effective method and visual results one paraller to the severity of the ocular pathology.
