- Title
Play-within-a-Play or Theatre-in-Film? Ingmar Bergman's Through a Glass Darkly.
- Authors
Smith, Lawrence D.
- Abstract
The article discusses the filmic borrowings of theatre elements in the work of Ingmar Bergman and his contemporaries. It states that Berman used the familiar theatrical convention of a play-within-a-play in the film "Through a Glass Darkly" which has been used in the sixteenth century in modern Western drama. Moreover, the play-within can perpetuate the illusion of larger drama, demonstrate and offer alternative choices in action and infiltrate subsequent actions on the part of the characters.
