DESTRUCTION OF BAMIYAN BUDDHAS TALIBAN ICONOCLASM AND HAZARA RESPONSE.
- Authors
HUSSEINI, SAID REZA
- Abstract
The article presents the author's views on the destruction of Buddhist statues in Bamiya, Afghanistan by members of the Taliban in March 2001. She states that the destruction of the statues undermined international law and challenged world heritage. She adds that the destruction is an Islamic iconoclastic action, however it cannot be described by Islamic iconoclasm alone. She explores the factors that possibly drove the Talibans to destroy the Bamiyan statues.
