- Authors
Small, Kathryn
- Abstract
The article presents discussion regarding the choral music genre of spirituals and their importance within the music education curricula of U.S. public schools. The author describes how she first had difficulty explaining why she included them in her curricula when first confronted by it. The article then defends the spiritual as an essential element of U.S. musical tradition. The history and characteristics of the spiritual are outlined. The controversy surrounding the religious nature of the songs is also addressed. Guidelines are offered to promote and apply the use of spirituals in public music classrooms.
