- Abstract
The aim of the study is to present the Round Table Talks between February and April 1989, which defined the framework for regime change in Poland, by focusing on criticisms from opposition organizations that did not participate in the discussions. The negotiations were approached critically from the beginning. The criticisms that gave voice to disagreement made social and political fractures visible. At the site of these fractures, the change of regime in Poland--pioneering in Central and Eastern Europe--severely fragmented the opposition groups, despite the fact that their primary goals were identical. Aside from the success of the Round Table Talks on peaceful transformation, avoiding social explosion, and further political repression, we have to mention contemporary criticism of the results set out in the agreement. Furthermore, due to lively interest in the Polish sample, a brief discussion of the Hungarian perception of the negotiations cannot be avoided. Regarding the sources, the study relies primarily on documents, especially samizdat papers, of the Polish opposition organizations that criticized the Round Table Talks. The article's literature base contains a mix of historical and political scientific works, including recent Polish writings which were generated due to a recent surge in interest in the subject.
