- Abstract
The article discusses the democratic political culture of Hungarian secret societies in the 18th century. Societies such as the Freemasons are seen as having absorbed the philosophy of the Enlightenment in Europe, creating a space for free discussion about the reform of civil society in the repressive social context of absolute monarchy. In addition, the culture of secrecy of these societies is seen as a reflection of government secrecy in Hungary. Contemporary historical commentaries on Hungarian Freemasonry of the latter 18th century are examined and compared.
