- Abstract
After his return from Siberian captivity during World War I, France Stelè resumed his work as chief conservator in Ljubljana and, as successor to Izidor Cankar as editor of the journal Dom in svet, also placed himself at the forefront of contemporary Slovenian art. In collaboration with Cankar and a group of writers and artists, Stelè created an expressionist journal of European standing that promoted young avant-garde writers and in which all three art historians, who were at the forefront of the young progressive discipline, opened the door to postwar modernism. Confronted with increasing pressure from Frančišek Borgia Sedej, the Archbishop of Gorizia, Stelè resigned as editor after two and a half years. At about that time, Izidor Cankar sent him a picture postcard from the Munich Glyptothek with the motif of Marsyas receiving Apollo’s punishment. Was the Greek myth, popular among expressionists, chosen arbitrarily, or does it in fact provide a key for a historical retrospect?
