- Abstract
The role of physiotherapists in primary health care (PHC) seems to have been driven by the curricular guidelines for physiotherapy undergraduate courses, which dates from 2002. Since then, several representative professional entities have produced new knowledge and spread research papers, allowing for a deeper reflection on the practice in this particular field. This study aimed to analyze the performance of physiotherapists, through a literature review, which included full Brazilian texts published in scientific journals, including virtual ones. The profiles of the articles were determined, and phyiotherapists' performance categories were defined, allowing for easier presentation and discussion. 21 articles were found, of which 16 specifically described performance in PHC. 14 articles were written by professionals working for public institutions. 19 articles were authored by academic professionals, pointing to the academic function of knowledge production. 7 articles were published by specific physiotherapy journals. 8 articles belonged to the "case report and experience" profile. Of the 16 articles analyzing performance categories, the following were found in decreasing order of frequency: health education, household activity, group activity, epidemiologic investigation and planning, interdisciplinary activities, academic performance, individual care at the Primary Health Care Unit (PHCU), the care of patients`carers, intersectorial activities and embracement. In spite of the relevance of all articles, there was a lack of diversification and a paucity of details concerning the methods and instruments used by the physiotherapists in PHC. Some guidelines for the physiotherapists` performance were proposed, with the intention that the former be enlarged, discussed and reviewed.
