- Abstract
This article discusses Carolyn Carty's book, which analyzes the political message of the twelfth-century reliquary shrine of St. Heribert of Cologne. The shrine, a significant piece of Rheno-Mosan art, has not previously been studied in English. Carty examines the shrine's iconography and argues that it supports the spiritual power over the temporal power. She also explores the motivations behind the shrine's political message, suggesting that it was a response to the troubled ecclesiastical politics of the reign of Frederick I. The book offers valuable insights into the relationship between imperial-papal disputes and their practical effects at a local level.
