- Abstract
My research project in Rome aimed to challenge histories of nationalistic or isolationist feminisms by charting the transnational flows of feminist print culture between Britain and Italy from the 1970s-1980s. This example of shared, supralinguistic rhetoric demonstrates how the circulation of otherwise ephemeral gestures of protest in feminist periodicals mobilised and mediated political feelings, and connected distinct islands of feminist print culture. Yet Italian feminist activism was highly influential for the women's movement in Britain - from the Wages for Housework campaign to the synergies between socialist-feminist groups such as Lotta Femminista and Big Flame.
