- Abstract
The article aims to analyze the discursive strategies that, between 1988 and 1996, were used by the Spanish communists with the purpose of delegitimizing the Socialist Party, then in government. Under the leadership of Julio Anguita, the PCE and IU carried out a strong opposition against the socialists that was synthesized in the formula of the "two banks". According to it, the communists and their allies were the only actors located on the left bank. Instead, the Socialist Party was located on the right bank, since it was the promoter of a project that was regressive in terms of civic values, social rights and democratic freedoms. The body of the article will examine these rhetorical schemes and their underlying logics, while the conclusions will highlight both their limitations and their legacy.
