Organisational learning and the role of attitude surveys.

- Abstract
The article examines the role of one of the most useful inventions to emerge from the social sciences--the attitude survey--in organisational learning. Problems associated with the term "organisational learning" are explored and a conceptual framework is presented for understanding the process and dealing with these difficulties. A central feature of this framework are the beliefs which the organisation's decision-making agents hold towards powerful stakeholders. An attitude survey is a management tool which is a source of knowledge about employee stakeholders. A series of attitude surveys carried out by a university-based research centre illustrate how they are typically used by management. Finally, in the light of these applications, the role of attitude surveys in organisational learning is explored, examining both benefits and limitations.
