- Title
Ritual Slaughter: Still Criticized . . . and Supported.
- Authors
ROSENBERG, MARTHA
- Abstract
This article discusses the controversy surrounding ritual slaughter of animals, specifically kosher and halal slaughter, which has received increased news coverage. The practice involves not stunning or rendering the animals insensate before slaughter, leading to prolonged suffering. Some countries have sought to limit or ban ritual slaughter, leading to accusations of religious persecution. While some EU countries now require stunning before ritual slaughter, others have legalized or loosened restrictions. In the US, humane slaughter laws were introduced in 1958, but religious slaughter was exempted. The article highlights the strong sentiments on both sides of the debate.
