- Abstract
The article discusses 19th century American literature professor, poet, and critic Sidney Lanier and his writings on the Anglo-Saxon tradition. Lanier, it is noted, tried repeatedly in his writings to create a link between England and America in order to strengthen the cultural significance of his country. The work of critics John D. Kerkering and Yopie Prins on Lanier's incorporation of musical elements into his prosody are considered. Other topics include the poetry of Walt Whitman and the metrical qualities of Lanier's poem "Psalm of the West."
