- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the development and historical significance of the "Mirror of Princes" genre in the early Middle Ages. Details are given defining the genre of political treatises speculating and outlining the policies and characteristics of an ideal king or ruler. Several examples of such works during the Carolingian era are discussed, including those by anonymous theorist Pseudo-Cyprianus, the monk Cathwulf, and the scholar Alcuin. Characteristics of the genre are described along with mention of how the genre grew in popularity and influence.
