- Abstract
Experimental flint knapping is one of the most important as well as most controversial approaches of lithic analysis. Western countries like Europe and America have nearly about 138 years history of flint knapping experiments and still now the development of this field of archaeological research going on there in an increasing rat. In India unfortunately potentiality of flint knapping experiment in lithic analysis is generally under-estimated; it is usually treated as the step child of lithic analysis and commonly considered to be no more than simple auxiliary data collection method which is resorted to only on rare occasions to test the reasonable-ness of a belief concerning an artifact's usage or method of fabrication. Fortunately very recently this trend in Indian archaeology has changed and a number of new scholars have involved themselves in flint knapping experiments and related topic of research. In this scenario the aim of this paper is to put forward an overview of flint knapping experiment in the field of Indian Archaeological and Anthropological research, and also making some ideas on the recent experimental flint knapping, done by the present author in the laboratory of the Department of Anthropology, University of Calcutta.
