- Abstract
This research has been carried out with the aim of determining the methods used by intensive care nurses, who encounter pain most frequently, related to pain and determining their knowledge and behaviors regarding pain. 127 nurses working in the intensive care clinics of a university hospital have been included in the descriptive type planned research. Personal Information Form and Nurses' Information and Behavior Questionnaire about Pain have been used to collect data. It has been determined that 68.5% of the nurses with an average age of 28.24 ± 4.81 were female, half of them were married and 74.8% had an undergraduate education level. It has been detected that more than half of the nurses (58.3%) had received training on the care of painful patients, 46.5% frequently and 32.3% always encountered painful patients. In the study, it has been determined that 96.1% of the nurses used pharmacological treatment as an intervention for the painful patient. Of the nurses; 45.7% stated that they preferred pharmacological treatment as it was an effective management method in relieving pain and 44.9% stated that they preferred pharmacological treatment as they were on a doctor's order. When the total scores of the nurses' knowledge and behavior about pain [Mean ± SD 14.51 ± 2.19 ] is looked over, the nurses have been detected to have; 55.1% medium scores, 27.6% low scores and 17.3% high scores. Considering the findings of the study, it has been determined that the majority of nurses preferred pharmacological methods, and their knowledge and behavior levels were moderate.
