- Abstract
Introduction: Stroke often causes death or disability demanding care nursing home care or home care. Alcohol consumption represents one of stroke risk factors.\\\The goal of our study was to survey possible risk factors for stroke with a focus on alcohol abuse. Methodology: The study used a quantitative strategy using face- to-face dialogues. The data were collected using a standardized questionnaire to identify the general health literacy (HLSQ-16) and a non-standardized questionnaire relating to stroke prevention. The sample consisted of 1,004 respondents. Results: Alcohol consumption is perceived by Czech citizens as a smaller risk factor for stroke. Respondents answered that, in the last year, they had consumed alcohol (of any sort) 2 - 3x a month (21.4 %), 1 - 2x a week (20.7 %) or once a month (16.2 %). However, alcohol consumption is perceived as a risk factor of lower importance (40.1 %). Alcohol consumption is significantly influenced by the respondent's gender, age, marital status, occupation and education. The health analysis of respondents consuming alcohol at least once a week or more frequently showed that they did not undergo regular preventive examinations (at least once in two years) (p < 0.001), did not know their BP value (p < 0.01) and did not take their BP regularly (p < 0.01), they were not interested in the information on stroke (p < 0.001), did not know the stroke risk factors (p< 0.001). Conclusion: Since alcohol consumption is high in the Czech Republic, the education in stroke prevention should be focused on alcohol consumption for the Czech citizens perceive alcohol consumption as a risk factor of lower importance which can be neglected. To focus especially on at-risk groups as alcohol consumption is significantly influenced by the gender, age of the respondent, marital status, employment and education, ýznamne ovlivňuje pohlaví, vék dotazovaného, jeho rodinný stav, zamestnám' a vzdéláni. Tlie general public's awareness of this aspect should be improved both through healthcare professionals and mass media.
