- Abstract
The article focuses on the debate about the concept of national identity, which was initiated during the French presidential campaign of 2007 and opposed candidates Nicolas Sarkozy and Ségolène Royal. The main theories presented by the media and political specialists on this theme are described in this article. The author aims to understand the context in which the debate on national identity started, presents an overview of this debate during the presidential campaign, and emphasizes the uneasiness that it brought in the main political parties in France. It also reflects on the creation of a Ministry of National identity and Immigration by Sarkozy after he was elected.
