Sorting Out Categories of Bladed Weaponry.

- Abstract
This article challenges the familiar concept of "Islamic weaponry" by analyzing one unique example of that category, known among collectors as the "Persian revival sword." This weapon confuses many reputed experts by incorporating pre-Islamic symbolism into an otherwise strongly Islamic martial culture. However, this confusion arises largely from categories (such as "Islamic") imposed by writers without proper understanding of the sword's form, function, and historical context. By deconstructing "Islamic" and "Persian" as units of martial-historical analysis, the present discussion permits greater insight and appreciation of this and other important traditional weapons.
