- Title
The Taste of the Sun: Okra Soup in the Geechee Tradition.
- Authors
Hamilton, Kendra
- Abstract
The author focuses on okra soup and its significance in the tradition of Geechees or Gullahs, the enslaved Africans who were planted in American Low Country nearly 400 years ago, and their descendants. By considering the ingredients, she argues that okra soup is certainly the product of the people and their environment. She cites Geechees' effort to understand their common heritage and common struggle. Through the okra soup, she hopes that the Geechee tradition will be preserved and shared.
