- Abstract
tomb, their accounts of the appearances of Christ Risen raise questions. While the visions can easily be interpreted theologically as hallucinations or oneiroids, the doubt of the visionaries and the inability to recognize the Risen One (anagnorisis motif) are at odds with the phenomenon of the vision not only under psychological and biblical aspects, but also as to the purpose of proving the resurrection of Jesus as a fact. These inconsistencies can be explained neither by a failure of the disciples nor by the singularity of the reality of the resurrection; in fact, they point to a longer process of learning and understanding in which scriptural interpretation and recollection of the Last Supper were decisive factors on the way to the belief in the resurrection. Visions may have initiated or accompanied this process. The descent of the Holy Ghost symbolizes the non-simultaneously moment of acceptance of the belief in the Resurrection. This makes further apparitions superfluous and at the same time resulted in renewed enthusiasm for Jesus’ gathering initiative. Completely unexpectedly, non-Jews joined as well. With the subsequent confirmation of universalization, the rise of the Holy Ghost to become the third divine person also serves the purpose of legitimizing the further development of the Church.
